FIRST TIME GREATS

There are some people who were clearly just eant to make films; people who have an eye or exactly the right way to frame something; people who can connect with an audience nd tell them a story in the best possible way. These selections are the debut efforts of their directors and showcase each as a talent to be watched.

Koen Mortier brought all of the skills learnt in the advertising industry to his confronting debut, EX DRUMMER. Based on a controversial novel by Hermann Brusselmans the film is rich in detail and depth as it weaves a tale of smalltime punks dreaming of the rock ‘n’ roll life.

After beginning her career in acting, most notably in Francois Ozon’s 8 FEMMES, Marina de Van wrote, starred in and directed her debut IN MY SKIN. The film’s central character descends into an exploration of self through gruesome mutilation. Confronting and challenging.

After knocking back the offer to direct WILD THINGS 3 (true), Paul Andrew Williams went low-budget for his debut, forgoing the usual funding models to create a raw portrayal of London’s seedy underworld. Haunting and gripping until the very end, the film presents a human perspective on some very bleak events.
