THE HOLY MOUNTAIN PLAYING FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

28 Aug 2007

For one night only Alejandro Jodorowsky's mind-melting spiritual journey The Holy Mountain is playing at the Chauvel Cinema on a brand new 35mm print.

Considered by many to be the greatest experimental film ever made The Holy Mountain is a barrage of sacrilegious imagery. Made in Mexico in 1971 and produced by Beatles manager Allen Klein the film boasts outlandish sets and costumes as rich in detail and bizarre as the plotline.

After years of obscurity and poor quality bootleg releases the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky are being officially released in Australia by Siren Visual. This very special screening is being presented in conjunction with Filmink magazine and TwoThousand:

WHAT: The Holy Mountain
WHEN: 9pm, Saturday, 1 September
WHERE: The Chauvel Cinema, cnr Oxford Street and Oatley Road

Tickets available from the Chauvel box office or through Moshtix.

The deluxe DVD box set is being release 13 September.

ABOUT ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY:
Born in the Chile in 1929 Alejandro Jodorowsky began his career in the theatre, studying under Marcel Marceau in Paris and working the theatre. With fellow surrealists Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal, he created the ‘Panic Movement'.

His first film Fando Y Lis provoked a riot when it debuted at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival. It was 1971's El Topo that brought Jodorowsky to an American audience and started the ‘Midnight Movies' phenomenon. At the encouragement of John Lennon, manager Allen Klein provided $US1 million to produce Jodorowsky's masterwork, The Holy Mountain. The film is to this day considered his most daring films.

Jodorowsky's filmography also includes Tusk (1979), the critically acclaimed Santa Sangre (1989) and The Rainbow Thief (1990).

A specialist in the Tarot, Jodorowsky has developed a career in graphic novels, collaborating with illustrators such as Moebius and Juan Gimenez. He still conducts weekly Tarot reading in Paris, where he lives with his wife. He has developed a mixture of psychotherapy and shamanism called ‘Psychomagic'.
