The films of pioneering surrealist filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky are coming to Perth for a special run of one-off screenings next month. Presented by Planet Video, Screen West and Siren Visual the screenings will run from 7-9 November at the Astor Cinema in Mt Lawly.
Beginning with the film that started the midnight movies movement, El Topo, the min-festival will also include the director's controversial debut feature Fando y Lis, as well as the penultimate, ground-breaking work The Holy Mountain.
After more than thirty years of legal disputes Alejandro Jodorowsky's provocative and ground breaking masterpieces are being officially released for the first time. Presented on new 35mm prints, these one-off screenings are not to be missed.
El Topo - Wednesday, 7 November (restored 35mm print)
The qasi-western head-trip that became the first ‘midnight movie', kicking off a phenomenon that was followed by John Water, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, George A Remero and David Lynch.
Fando y Lis - Thursday, 8 November (digital projection)
Jodorowsky's controversial black and white debut caused a riot when it premiered at the Acapulco Film Festival in Mexico in 1968.
The Holy Mountain - Friday, 9 November (restored 35mm print)
Funded by Beatles manager Allen Klein this film is a barrage of sacrilegious imagery and extravagant set pieces as a group of powerful individuals seek out the Holy Mountain on a quest to displace the immortal God's the run the universe.
