BOXING DAY RANKS ON CRITICS END OF YEAR LISTS

09 Jan 2008

Richard Green in Boxing DayDespite its limited theatrical release, Kriv Stenders' powerful film Boxing Day ranked a mention in several critics 2007 wrap-ups.

The Age's Philippa Hawker named Richard Green's performance recovering alcoholic Chris as one of the year's finest in her piece A Year In The Cinemas. Now the current issue of The Big Issue has named Boxing Day "one of the best Australian films of the year".

Boxing Day is gripping story of Chris, a recovering alcoholic on home detention, trying to bring his estranged family together over a Christmas lunch. The unexpected arrival of a former associate and a revelation puts the whole affair on a knife edge.

This harrowing film is presented in real-time as a single take, never letting up the tension, allowing to the story to play out in a documentary style. Shot on a micro-budget with a largely untrained cast this is Stenders at his rawest and best.

After endless critical acclaim at film festivals around the country Boxing Day screened in an exclusive run at the Nova Cinema in Melbourne.  The film has won its star the Best Actor gong at the Montreal Festival Du Nouveau Cinema 2007 and the Australian Directors Guild/Directors Guild of America Sreenings Flinders Award.

Boxing Day will be released on DVD through Siren Visual in April.
