SLEEP’S HOLY MOUNTAIN MEETS JODOROWSKY’S HOLY MOUNTAIN

06 May 2008

If you're anywhere in the southern part of Australia this afternoon you're no doubt sheltering indoors from the rain and contemplating the eeriness of the dark afternoon sky. Allow us to provide you with the perfect aural and visual accompaniment to the end of this grey day.

The link above is for a YouTube clip combining footage from Alejandro Jodorowsky's surreal masterpiece The Holy Mountain with a song from stoner rock pioneers Sleep's Holy Mountain. Turn it up and be swallowed. The footage is from an old bootleg release. The official release through Siren is completely restored and much sharper than what is used in this clip.

Sleep were one of pioneers of the modern crop of stoner metal, whose members went on to form both High on Fire and Om. In 1993 they released Sleep's Holy Mountain, a heavy tribute to detuned guitar histrionics.

Sleep's Holy Mountain

Alejandro Jodorowsky is a true polymath - filmmaker, philosopher, author, newsreader, world-leading expert on the tarot - and one of the great surrealists of our time. He made his genre-defining classic The Holy Mountain for US$1million in 1971 in Mexico as a follow-up to the surreal western El Topo.

Sleep's Holy Mountain is available on Earache.

Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain is available from Siren here.

The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky box set, which contains four DVDs, two CDs and a 60-page booklet is available from Siren.
