WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR FILM IN THE CUTTING ROOM?

Shining: Recut

I recently read an absolutely awesome book about the trials and tribulations of independent filmmakers. The only complaint I have is directed towards me, for failing to read it years ago.

The 90's...Weinstein, Soderberg , Tarantino, Billy-Bob, Damon, Affleck, Smith....these headliners supported by a huge cast of characters turned the film industry on its head with their integrity and/or deplorable actions.

One of the recurring themes which constantly reduced filmmakers to ulcers and tears were the relentless cuts forced upon them from Distribution companies, in order to make their films more marketable (read, Harvey Sissorhands).

Matt Damon described it like this: "It was like you bake a soufflé and somebody wants you to make it half the size, and you just chop the thing in half and try to mould it and make it look like that was how you made it to begin with. It can't work."

As insightful and off-putting as that analogy is, I felt I could sympathize but not completely comprehend what these directors were going through via words alone. You gotta see it (that's why we're adding more pictures to our site every day).

So a few weeks back I stumbled across this link which:

  • A: Illustrates the point beautifully.
  • B: Had me in stitches.

Ok so the film is from a different era, but the point remains valid.
