From the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King to the rapidly escalating war in Vietnam to the wonder of the moon landing, director David Hoffman delves behind the headlines to examine the mood of ordinary people during the time.
Funded by PBS this landmark series includes six one-hour programs:
1. Seeds of the Sixties
Establishes the political and social context of the sixties generation, from the pursuit of the ‘American Dream’ to the depression, cold war and McCarthyism.
2. We Can Change the World
Examines the heady idealism of the 1960's; college enrollments soared; social and political activism was inspired by John F. Kennedy on both the left and the right; and the civil rights movement reached a peak of influence, involvement and momentum.
3. Breaking Boundaries, Testing Limits
The youth rebellion – one of the quirkiest and most penetrating movements in American history – is the focus of this episode, tracing its evolution from the innocent days of Beatle mop-tops to the hippie epicenter of The Haight.
4. In a Dark Time (PBS)
This program dissects the increasing polarisation of the Vietnam War’s supporters and opponents as well as the mounting racial tensions that sparked nationwide riots. This leads to the violent year of 1968 as political protest began to fuse with social ferment.
5. Picking Up the Pieces
Despite the ongoing war in Vietnam and the continuing violence and absurdities of the war by 1969 there was a definite sense of something ending. The seeds of the seventies were planted: the Women's Movement; the Silent Majority; and, the citizen action movement.
6. Legacies of the Sixties
The final program looks at the effect of the Sixties on many of the people seen in previous episodes. Stories on how their lives have been changed for better or for worse by the sixties experience and the political, social and cultural effect of the Sixties.
The perfect examination of the decade the moved America.
