Beginning as a deceptively ordinary drama about a lonely widower looking for companionship, Audition climaxes in an out of control into an endurance test of the audiences' nerves. Shigeharu Aoyama is the likeable owner of a television production company and a devoted father. Seeing his father's loneliness the son encourages him to marry again. His colleague Yoshikawa has a simple, ethically dubious idea: hold auditions for a fake television project to canvas potential wives. Despite his hesitations about the plan Aoyama agrees. At the auditions he comes across the strikingly beautiful Asami Yamasaki, a 24 year-old ex-dancer with a shy and demure manner. Aoyama becomes obsessed with the young girl and a relationship ensues. All is not as it seems with this obedient, seemingly docile woman. Blinded by his obsession Aoyama is oblivious. Whether considered J-horror, psychological thriller or social commentary, Audition is a visceral experience - the work of an original and creative filmmaker.
