Tetsuo: The Iron Man is a visceral masterpiece, shot on 16mm black and white film. After being involved in a hit and run accident a Japanese businessman is consumed and ultimately transformed by his own anger and rage. With minimal dialogue the story unravels through the confronting and surreal scenes of mutation that utilise animation techniques not dissimilar to Czech master Jans Svankmajer.

Tetsuo: Body Hammer explores the same themes of anger as a force of change. This time the grainy black and white aesthetic is replaced with the use of a series of stark colour treatments. In this installment Tsukamoto explores a more liner storyline. A businessman's son is kidnapped by thugs and he is drugged. His rage unleashes the change of his physical form. As with its predecessor Body Hammer uses confrontational imagery rather than traditional narrative to convey the story. It was the work of Shinya Tsukamoto, particularly his Tetsuo films, which paved the way for modern day Japanese directors such as Takeshi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) and Hideo Nakata (Ringu) as well as influencing many western directors, such as Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill), David Fincher (Fight Club) and the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix).
